CAMBRIDGE BRANCH ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

A meeting of the Cambridge branch of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society arill be held immediately on the conclusion ot the Cambridge Highway District Board mooting, on the 13th instant. Amongst the business which will come before members of this branch society will be the distribution of tree and grass seeds about to be forwarded from the parent association in Auckland. Wo are glad to learu.th.it the representations made by the Cambridge members to the Chairman of the Auckland Society in reference to the indiscriminate shooting of game which has taken place in Wai. kato generally, and especially in the Cambridge district, has not been without effect. A list of names of gentlemen who would be willing to act as Rangers having been forwarded to the Saperinteudenb, his Honor has signed the warrant for their* appointment.. Messrs. John Martyn, Robt Kirkwood, John A Douglas, RichardParker, John Eishev, and John Runcimau having beau duly appointed Ranges under the Act, poaching will receive a check, in the Cambridge district at least, which luis been much needei, and i hough this has been delayed until somewhat lato in t\e season, it may yet serve to save, to Borne extent, the destruction of pheasants and other gaTie, which would be otherwise

lemlerul oxtruui.-l/ suaruj next year. Whilst writing u;>m this subject, we would surest tlu desirability of making Gvciy iilth beasou a closed one throughout the province, or of ono month's duration, o.ily instead of three, as necessary both in the interests of the sportsman of aud tha farmer. There is another matter also to which »ye would draw attention, and that is, the very meagre support the Auckland Acclimatisation Society receives in any part of Waikato other than the Cambridge district. Of twenty-four subscribers to tha Society in Waikato twenty-two belong to tho Cambridge district, one to Hamilton and one to Te Awamutu, and yet the people of the Waipa look for the stocking of that river with fish, and of Waikato generally with imported birds. For Ham. ilton especially this faqt tells most discreditably, tha leading settlers of which district look upon themselves as the "creme de la creme" of Waikato sportsmen, yet with one single exception they do not directly contributea single farthing towards tho introduction of fish, birds, and seeds into their district. Altogether the support which the Society receives from Waikato which, as the chief agricultural district in the North Island) might be expected largely to encourage such an association is most meagre and disproportioned, but from any share in sach " lachea " of duty Cambridge must stand honorably acquitted.
