WHATA WHATA. June 30th, 1876.
Wo are sorry, hero, t-> loirn that the "<»*! party of tho A.O. n,ra likely to le.wa tliis district, to go into winter qu-irfcers. They have beau her« five month-?, and have dune a great de.il of permanent nn& usefnl voad work. Two large cuttings have bean made, and they were about to commence another. Had it been finished, .we would have have had a fair road to Ngaruawahia j that is, as far as the liilla are concerned. In other respects, the A.O. have been a, benefit to the township daring their stay. There has been muckless drinking among the natives, for they stand in awe of a blue coat with, brass buttons. It seems a pity that one or two of the A.C. cannot be stationed here permanently. At present "we have no constable, and the natives, when excited with drink, aro not particular as to what they do. Perhaps, if this were represented in the right quarter, we might get a guardian of the peace. Winiata's brother has been hero, and bounced a good deal, until one of the A.O. came upon the scene, when he found it convenient to leave. 1 am informed that a lime kiln was to be started in the neighbourhood of Whata Whata. Tho land belongs to the Government, but, I understand, they will not gmnt a lease of it, as it is on the west side of the Waipa, and no doubt included in the block, being bought v.p for the uativea to settle upon. It is a disappointment, for we were hoping to g-et cheap lime. The people of Whata Whata are glad to welcome back Mr D. B. Hindle, just returned from a visit to England, and more so, as there werd sojao doubts as to whether he would come back again. We want more settlers. Theare is lots of good land to be selected, and, L believe Whata Whata land is beginning to be thought more of than it has been in the past.— Own Correspondent.
