GOVERNMENT LAND SALE. Auckland, last night, At the land sale to-day there was a grood attendance. Allotment 220, Hamilton East, L 26, James Droger ; lot 386, LlO, Seddon. Te Awamutn, lot 4, LI OS, J. R»»che. Lot 4, Rangiriri, L 7 10s, Shirley. Hamilton West : Lot 26 t,L35, James Hay; lot 274, L4O, James Wave ; lot 323, L2O, James Martin ; lot 329, L 25, Ridler j lot 326, L2O, Lew os ; lot 359, L 25, Sydney Daude. Taupiri : Lot 4, LlO, Cropp. Cambridge Enat : Lot 426, L 46, Golden j lot 418, L2O, Halley. Other country lands sold well, Tho Governor and Sir D. McLean proceeded to the Bay of Islands to-day. The visit probably will last a week. The Thames steamer Durham caught fire at ten o'dloclc this morning, and had to be scuttled. Tee damage is estimated at L5OO. The fire broke out it four in the morning, when it was believtd to bo extinguished.
THE SPEAKERSHIP. Wellington, last night. The Wellington " Tunes" says Mr Fitzherbert, after consulting his political friends, has signified his willingness to accept tho position of Speaker, on the understanding that it has been offered in a manner alike honorable to himself and the Government.
Chhistchurch, last night. The " Timed" denies on authority the report that Air Rolleston intended to accept tiie appointment of Under-Secretary for Education after next session. — [The 4atoraeut of tho "Times" is correct, — Ed. W.T.] Extensive land sale 3 continue. The amount received for land on Monday was | L 7,720, and yesterday L 13,498. MR BROOKFIELD OFFERED THE
RESIDENT MAGISTRACY. Napier, lust night. It is rumoured that Mr Brookiield, Crown Proßecutor of Auckland, will be 'Appointed Resident Magistrate here, in the room of Mi- Sealy, the latter retiring on his pension. Mr Brookfie'd will also hkely be appointed District Judge. The proposed changes will not take place until after the meeting of Parliament.
THE EAS1 1 COAST BRIBEitY CASES. A telegram from Tauranga says an informatioa has been laid by a man named Joseph Highley against Capfc. Read himself, on the ground that through his agent Major Pitt, he gave oertaia monies to Hori Ngatui, in order to induce him to proeuro votea for C iptain Read during the East Co.ist election. An affilavit ha» likewise been sworn to by T J Henslww, to the effect that Major Pitt was Captain Reed's accredited agent.
