THE BANK OF NEW ZEALAND.

The abatement made at the half-yearly meeting of the shareholders of the Bank of New Zealand hold on Friday last, some short account of which appeared in our Auckland telegraini of that day's date, cannot but be considered as moat latisfactory— not only by the fortunate shareholders but by the publio generally—representing as it does the prosperity of the national bank of the colony. That the business of the bank tiepends on no fortuitous or adventitious aid is- clearly to be seen by the regularity with which one half year after another discloses the fact that its business, whatever may be the surrounding circumstances, is steadily on the increase, and that it is enabled to declare the some large dividend in fayonr of the shareholders. This is attributable to two causes : the favour with which the institution is regarded by the public at large-the national charaoter, in fact, which attaches to it— and thejprudent management of ita directors. Established only 14$ years ago | in s. colony even now numlwriag bnt a third of a Bullion of wliabitauta and plung«d during «,

large portion ef trbat period in the losses and uncertainties of a ruinous war, the Bank of New Zealand, with many younger and vigoraus riva's to contend against, may feel justly proud that aftor paying year by ye&r suck dividends as it has, it can again announce a dividend at the rate of fifteen per cent, per annum, and carry its reserve fund up to a quarter of a million sterling. That the shareholders themselves fully appreciate the position it shown bjr the confidence which they reposed in the directors *t Friday last's meeting ns to the management of the inttsUtutioa in the future.
