ALEXANDRA.
April 24th, 187 G. "We^ave 'had another -very dull week ■here,iHusineBS being -very slack, the river •continuing 1 ao very low the natives are mnabie to .get down with their orops without great labour and risk of an upset, of course, they would rather avoid. Dr Waddington was unfortunate last week in losing some of his best bred young ewos by dogs ; three were killed in the jpaddock 'by them and -several worried, borne of which have been since killed or ( died. Mr "Waddington, junr fired at one j -of the dogs and wounded it, the owners of the animals were discovered, who of course immediately destroyed them, and will cs far as payment will do it, compensate tLe ] Doctor. | Our bridge .contractors have not yet •succeeded in getting up the timber for the piles in repairing our bridge. It is to r be hoped, they will succeed in doing so .erelong. A small bush bridge has long been ' required at the Southern end of the ' llarapipi lioftd Board district, It is just • outside the Alexandra Township boundary on the road to Kopua and Kuiti, -•several accidents have already occurred ■there, and as individuals, I think, all ol 'the Trustees ht,ve expressed themselves in favour of having the job done, but the " who will never forget the Alexandra people" never says " the work will not»be done by the Board," as he is Baid tcbe " King" of Harapipi, I presume this is unalternble. A requisition to the Board however, to do the -work is being piepared, and will.be numerously signed by the settlers, who have occasional business with Kopua natives. The Mailman has also been several times stuck qp there. ' 'Those facts, .perhaps properly and humbly sfafed, m.iy induce his " Majesty" to altei Jliis- decision and the work be done. There was a pretty large meeting at Kuiti last week to me«t and welcome Pohipi, ofTaupo, and his natives. Tho meeting, I am informed, was of no political -significance, but merely to obtain some of the Hauhau daughteis as wi\es foi tbe'tribe. Tawhiao, I am iufotmed, has returned to Hikurangi a few days since ; 'lie has not, and does not intend visiting the 'Kniti at least for the present. — Gun
