TREE PLANTING IN OUR TOWNSHIPS.
:■ Sir,— For the<firsttime duringnsar-ly four, years' * residence in Waikato, I was at iNgacuawahia , yesterday; and I was much struck with tlio pretty aippoaranes"bf' tho^plaee, planted as its' broad fßtwetsiarej-trith 'double rows of pinus insignu = arid- eucalyptus, and it in iitdedd to be wished a .that obherTown 'Boards in Waikato would follow (s the crumple of Svgaruawabia in this- rtspeot. '^Ehere-ir.iwo, -another ph*se of the , question .-•• apart altojethe? from an asthetic one, and that . ii th4deßirabdity>o&plantiqg our town .itreots, - not orxlj with- ornamental trees, but with gum or •ucalyptuiai apreTentife to fevcn. Owing to . Ute iwampy ebaractar of much of the Waikato ws are more than* ordinarily luiceptible to the influences of ferex, and especially in teasoul such as the present one, .and, it is > a -well prored fact that th* growth of the eucalyptus is one of the best atmosphericpui-ifieri of malarious miasma that can be obb«iued, '-So fully is the smitarj Talue of this tree < acknowledged bj European savans that of late > years the neighbourhood of the Pontine marshes, near Rome, has been largly planted -with eucalypti. The - cost of the seodliaga would be absolutely nothing, and that of fencing in eaoh young tree and kaeping tht enclosure clear from grass and •wteds for the first two or three years would not be great. At any rate it would be A very legitimate txpenditure for our township boards, and ' on* that no ratepayer oould objaot to as in beautifying and improring the town and rendering it a more desirable place of residence, it would be improTing th« property of oTery individual house ownor. — I am &c, JK. JLUxandra, April, 15th, 1876.
