Auckland, Wednesday. In the * ' Gazette " to-day Thomas Baker is appointed poundkeeper at Te Awamutu, and the premises formerly used by P P Neil are proclaimed as the public pound. The " Cross" desorves tbe thanks of the community for ferretting out and raforming the abuse in the administration of the Three Kings' Trust. The property is to be at once leased, and tbe proceeds applied to the objects for which the inatitntion. was endowed.
Grahams-town, Wednesday, j Scarlet fever is more prevalent than over. Another death has taken place, and aevere.l fresh cases are reported. A carter named Dunlop, vrhile his horses were feeding, stumbled on a reef snowing; good gold iv the neighbourhood of the Little Agnes. The claim is pegged out.
Taubanoa, "Wednesday. Mr Koller, an old resident, fell off the wharf while walking up from the Kowena and was drowned last night. The body was recovered thtß morning. Captain Morris' agent ha» had information for bribery, in lat* elections, laid against him. A member of the Native Contingent, A. C, is missing, and is supposed to be lost in the bush. The remains of Mr Reynolds, of Cambridge, who died at Ohinomutu, were brought into town on Saturday evening, i and were interred yesterday. The funeral w.is to have Ukeu place on Monday afternoon but had to be postponed till the next morning owiug to the absence of the i clertrviuan.
I Napier, Wednesday. Gre.it preparations are being made for the Uovemor's reception.
Wkllinoton, Wednesday. The " New Zealand Times " is to go on ; with a curtailment of expenses. The i directors and shareholders are better satisfied with the concern than was expected. The Chamber of Commerce is still agitating increased wharf accommodation.
Dukrdik, Wednesday. Constable Henry Vernon, of Green Island, was found fearfully mutilated in the Cavershaui Railway tunnel. * The ileneaaed was on duty at the racecourse on Saturday until half-past six. It i 3 not yet known whether he fell from the train or was run over when walking through the tunnel. He was considered a thoroughly steady and efficient officer. I At the inquest on Vernon to-day, the jury added ft rider to the verdict, expressing an opinion that a fine should be imposed for trespassing on mil way property. At the race meeting the lessees of the insisted on charging reporters for admission. Legal proceedings have been fciken to obtain refund of the shilling paid under compulsion.
