For this event, Fishhook and Gamecock weiv. great favourites up to the start. The betting was 8 to 1 on the field, bar one Tattler, Kight Bower, Puu^awerewere;, King Philip, aud Guy Fawkes, all received good support. Rory O'More bolted and ran right round the courso before he could be stopped. The start was from a distance. Passing the Stand, tJhe Merry Monarch leading, Guj Fawkes and Pungawerewere were almost level. Fishhook was not near the front. At the back of the course some of the torses held the best plaoes. Coining round the slope iufco the straight Pungawerewere had the lead, and Tadnior looked dangerous for a moment. Passing the grand stand Pungawerewere kept in front, Guy Fawkes second, Merry Monarch third, and Tadmor fourth. Along the back stretch King Philip went up, and raced for the lead, but never headed the mare. When rounding the turn Right Bower shot out from the ruck and passed the King at the distance. Pungawerewere having a lead, was closely pushed by Bower, with Guy Fawkes and King Philip looking very dangerous. There was a splendid race up the straight, but though Right Bowor ran very gamely he never caught the mare, who wou % * clear length in a style that showed that ahe was no coward, King Philip about two lengths oS third, with Guy Fawkes a good fourth. Then there was a long gap. Pungawerevrei'o carried three and a quar-
ter pounds overweight, and Amohia twelve and a half. Fifteen horses started,; Korari and Toiupleton being tciatched. 4min. T^Becs. Newmarket Stakes, of 60 sevs. ; entrance, 3 sovg, ; one mile and a distance. Weight for age.

Several false starts -were made, but ultimately they g.»t well away. 'Guy Fawkes came iv fiist, Ariel a close second, and Hevctrles a bad third. Ravy O'More fell and was severely injured, and could not get up. Pftravhonna, Cloth of Gold, and King Philip were scratched. The bettiog was three to five against Ariel.
