PIAKO.

Sir,— Please try to find a space in your valuable paper for the 'following jottings from our district. And first I would beg to thank you on my own behalf, and also on behatt of settlers generally, for 'so ably advocating our uause in seeking -to obtain a weekly mail delivery. At a meeting held a few days ago it was decided to forward a petition to the Postmaster Generfll on the subject. Our annual pic-nic came off last week, thanks to the indefatigable zeal of Mrs, Cochrane, Mrs Walker and Mrs Tickel>.penny, who provided the eatables, Ac, for the affair. The pic-nic was held as usual among Mr McDonalds .peach trees. About ten o'clock a.m. 'might be seen groups of happy families wendifig their way to the garden where the best punches were. When tired of eating peaches the youngsters enjoyed themselves with swings and most of the others engaged in games of various sorts till dinner time, when the whole assemblage, numbering fifty, seated themselves on the ground J and partook of a sumptuous repast, whioh every -one seemed to enjoy. 5 was set to carve a big turkey, and I can assure you that I enjoyed a part of it with a slice of prime ham amazingly. The children too, after dinner Ibhink it wss, seemed to be highly delighted wilh a fdr lollies, looking particularly pleased when mouth and both hands wer^ full of them. After dinner, games were again resorted to, and towards evening a start "was made for home, all having spent ft happy day together. There is every prospect of our having a school erected before long. The Board of Education promised £80, and I believe subscriptions to the uroount of £50 are promised. These sums with Mr Morrin's offer of a building as a gift, ought to "be sufficient for both School and Teacher's house. The great difficulty seems to be a central site for the school .OWN ConmifoAdent>
