TE AWAMUTU. Dec. 99th.

The talk of the town is that Cox is going up and Me Minn going down. There ia an extraordinary amount of grass, but bad weather for haymaking. Not much is cut yet, because the late rains were anticipated. One of our local wise men observed ou the day of the cricket match, a dirty little " black pig" runuing about with a straw in his mouth. As this is a sure sign of rain, about Hfteen mowing machines were kept idle until the bad weather was past Free selectors are jubilant and are going to make fortunes over the ranges. Wondeiful tales are spread regarding the richness of this new land of Canaau that never was discovered bofoie. Previous accounts of the country are eiugulalry at variance with the present glowing ones. New homes are to spiiug up, roada to be put iii order, forest to be cleared, markets to bo found in some extraordiuary way, all sunshine and no gammon —not even of bacon. "We hear that Sergt Fisher of the Cambridge has won the "Star," I cannot congratulate him because it is a second hand affair, and all the gilt worn off by Trooper Keyuolds ; and last th<\t the Don is crushed out of the Cambridge handicap to make room for local favourites. — A Cobekspondent. [Our correspondent has evidently over-eaten myself at Chrietman, and is suffering from excess of bile. If Waikrto is to prosper and command respect outside the district, we must take as our motto if Epluribns unum and sink these local jealousies and suspicions. — Ed. W. I.~\
