THURSDAY, DECEMBER 30, 1875.

New Years Services.— A special Church of England service will be held by the Eer Mr Oalder in the Court-house, Harailten, on Friday night, to celebrate the departure of the old and the coming in of the , new year. Service will commence at a quarte/past eleven o'clock and conclude shortly after midnight. . Some special hymns have been prepared and printed for the occasion. There will doubtless be. .a large c< ii« gregation, and there will be a full choir. Div^ service will also be held in the Roman Catholic Ohurcb, Hamilton, at 10 a m, on New Years day. Ngarttawahia Spouts.— Tbjere. are' great preparations for sports here, writes a correspondent yesterday, and a couple of days good amusement is anticipated. The course is in splendid order, Good Templars' Booths side by side with Temples of Bacchus are fast going up, every provision is a making for the reception of visitors, and it is expected that these races will be the best that have taken place at tJgaruawuhiafor many yeare. Although the eports are advertised to commence at eleven o'clock eech day, to-morrow and Saturday, it is not, we understand, ntended to commence until after the arrival of the steamer from Hamilton. Waikato Postal Contracts.— We notice the following among the postal tenders which have been accepted for the inland mail services for the year in the Province of Auckland. Waiuku and Post office, Wai'katiO, S A Otdfield, £16 j Mercer, Hamilton, and Cambridge ; Hamilton, Ohaupo, Te Awamutu, and Alexandra, C'G Quick, £650 j Newcastle, Whata Whata, Waitetuna, and Raglan, A Barton, £130 j Whata Whata, Harapepe, and Alexandra, A Barton, £44: Alexandra and' Hendersons Mill, Mr Woodward, £35, We trust to see a supplimentary list shortly published with that of the HainiltDn and Piako service upon it. Christmas Day and boxing day were kept up in Hamilton in true holiday style, notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather throughout the greater part of the latter day. Young Hamilton, and old Hamilton too, for the matter of that, were not to be done out of their sports by Jupiter Pluvius or any other man, and mustered stiongly on the ground, though many muit have been wetted to the skin. Several, however, were wetted deeper than that, as in placing themselves inside Burkes for shelter from the be ivy weather, they placed themselves outside " heavy wet" of a more dangerous kind and were ultimately provided with lodgings by Constable Haddock, for which, in consideration of its being Christmas time, I)r Beale only charged them, with the exception of two individuals, five shillings each. These two being of au enthusiastically Protestant turn of mind and looking upon Boxing Day as peculiarly a religious festival had indulged in the additional luxury of challengingany adjective Papiat to mortal combat. 1875 happening, however, to fall— not in the reign of Ebzabeth bub that of Victoria — the expressed intention of hammering Papists wus coneideied by Dr Baalc, an extra, and as such, to be specially paid for, and as too great a rarity to be set down in the Dili of fare at anything lees than twenty ehiliinja. None of the guests at the Court tfou*e Hotel on Tuesday morning being members of the '• Upper Ten," and it being moreover Christmas time, we have not thought it worth while to transcribe their names from the viiitor's book.

Bank of New Zb\land.— Th\s bank in still extending i(a operations. We learn that a broach will shot My be opened at Opotiki, on the East Coast. — Auction Sale,— We have been requested to draw attention) tol Mr Znox's sale of potatoes to-day at two o'olook, at the Steam Company's store. The potatoes are «T good quality, and will be sold without reserve. Presbyterian Manse.— We understand that Mr Giffney's tender for building the Presbyterian Manic »t Ngaruawahia has been accepted. The faot that Mr Giffney has the cOntraot is sufficient guarantee for the erection of the building in a workmanlike -and thoroughly oatiifactoTy manner. Hamilton West S?oRTB.-^-It will be so«n that tue committee bare filled in the programme with the amounts of the prizes given in the several events advertised. The place of holding ' the sports will be announced in our Saturdays issue, the day on which they take place. Te* Bauds. — A Correspondent writiug fr m Kaipiha on Monday, says -: The natives predict another flood and it is raining cj if the.y would prove correct. A native jast eonre up from Alexandra says the creeks are now greatly flooded and that the road is nearly impassable. , Ellebblib Rjioes.— The following enterics were received on Wednesday night for the Handicap Hurdle Race : — Medora, aged, 12st lib ; lalesman, aged, list 121b ; Auckland Kate, aged, list 21b ; Moose, aged, lOst 81b ; Stranger," aged, lOst llbj Arrow, aged, lOst lib j Mystery,, 4yrs, 9st libKihikihi Eacbs and Sports.— -The settlers of Kihikihi, intend keeping up the" NeV Year on the~Brd of January, with "horse" racing "ftnbt* "athletic sjwrts. Most of the former, ai^ilfc be seen by advertisement elsewhere, are confin'ed'frf Waik*to bred horses which have never Am '.in a race before ' " Contirsazione. -We beg to • call the attention,of our Good Templar readers to the advertisement in another column, announcing a Conrenaaione in the Court House for Good Templars and their friends. We believe the- sisters have been very busy in the refre*hment department, and w these reunions promote good feel* ing amongst the lodges, we trust they will have a crowded meeting. Held over, through presrure of rtporti of meetings, &c. the letters of J 0 Johnstoae, West side settler, Cockatoo Elector, Caution, another account of the Alexandra concert, also the report of the Cricket mutch Zingari v United 18, and the letters of our Aotea and Raglan correspondents. Veritas having eect his letter'to the " Cro»s " must be content with its appearance in that .journal, otherwise we should have gladly published it. It is coutrary to &U rule 'to send letters simultaneously to. different papers. Yesterdays Nomination. — Mr Cox made a very telling, and jmart speech »y«iter day at the nomination, in which in the blandest mariner possible he •truck some severe body blows at the opposing candidate, his leal henchman Mr Roche and their political idol, Sir George Grey. As we are unable to give both speeches in fall to-day we give the preference to that of Mr McMinn, that gentleman never having been as fully reported before, while Mr Cox, at the Ngaruawahi i meeting, had the advantage of having his opinions placed in full before the readers of the Times. Goodlemplarf. — The Star of the East Lodge, I O G T, held their usual meeting last Saturday, to which they invited members of the other Lodges for the purpose of a social gathering. After the usual business had been transacted the Lodgo was dosed, and singing and dancing was kept up to a late or rather an earlj hour. Refreshments were provided in abundance by the Lodge, and superintended bj Bro and Sister Palmer who received a hearty vote of thanks for their exertions to promote the oomfort of their visitors.
