_ -^ Taubanoa, Friday. , A fetal boaiitocldent has occurred near Katikati. ! A, Wt containing three men: Alexander An&ei£dn, Arthur Stewart, and John M^rdock- Capsized. Anderson and Stewart jreradroirßed. Mardock, after clinging to the boat for some hours, was pfcktd mp by the Maoris*. Anderson is an old man, a respected Tauranga settler, and unmarried, Stewart and Murdoch were special Katikati settlers. The former leaves a wife and large family. Fears are entertained fcr the safety of a boat with four men which was out during the gale io which Anderson and party were capsized. The occupant* of the boat Vere Edward Darby, William Meehan, Allerley, and another. Subinspector Forster has despatched a boatparty in search.
Christohurch, Friday. Christeharch Races to-day : — Handicap , Hurdle Race, 50 soys, added to Wfcep stakes 5 sov3 each, 2 miles with 8 hurdles : Campbells Tommy Dodd, 1 ; O'Brien'a Palceha, 2 ; Craddoclc's Musoatel, and Campbells Speculation also raa. The betting was 3tol on Tommy Dodd. A good start was made, Speculation made good running, but baulked at first hurdle; Tommy Dodd led, jumping beautifully, with Muscatel second. When opposite the Grand Stand, Muscatel and Speculation baulked, the latter falling on the hurdle and breaking it down. Pakeha took second place at the top of the course and went up to Tommy Dodd, and the two ran together until the last jump but one, when Pakeha fell, Tommy Dodd winning as he liked, while Pakeha came in a bad second. Christchurch Plate, 150 soys, added to a sweepstake of 5 soys each , weight for age; 2 miles: Redwood's Korari, 1; Coleren's Fiah Hook, 2; P CaiHpbeil's Dauiel O'Rorke, 3. The betting was level on Korari and Fish Hook ; 4 to 1 against Daniel O'Korke ; and 6 to 1 against Pungawerewere. Korari led out, but when opposite the Grand Stand, Fish Hook went to the front, Pungawerewere already already oat of the race. A splendid race took place between the other three all round. Korari won by half a length ; Daniel a good third. Time : 3 mins 414- sees.
Newcastle. The Steamer Waipa has been successfully raised and has gone on to the Waikato heads for repairs. It is intended to at once establish public baths here. Nearly the whole sum required for their construction has been subscribed.
