Auckland, Wednesday evening. Richard Barrett, injured in the Short-land-street row, died in the hospital. An inquest will be held to-morrow. The citizens intend to give a ball to the captain and officers of the German ship Gazelle, at the Choral Hall, next week. A case of supposed drowning is reported. A man named Chriss, lately from Wellington, who had paid his passage to Levuka, is missing. News from Tonga states that the missionaries have induced King George to adopt representative institutions. Parliament was opened with a Royal speech. The members were dressed in old uniforms, and a miscellaneous collection of European clothing. They presented a motley appearance. The novel charge afc the Police Court against three settlers for wrongfully taking part in a ratepayers meeting at the Wade was dismissed. Joseph Radrick, seaman, for assaulting the second mate of
the Southern Cross, was sentenced to 7 days. Sir George Grey, and the members who acted with him in Parliament, are to receive a public ovation on their return to Auckland.
Grahamstown. The Queen of Beauty divides £78 8s per share. The Cure has a thousand ounces of gold for the fortnight.
DumsDiir. Sir George Grey's lecture on Australasia was a great success. A caucus of the leading Opposition members decided upon a definite programme that is not disclosed. Mr Stout will probably announce it at a meeting of his constituents on Friday. There was a shocking accident on the railway pier at Port Chalmers. Albert Smith caught his foot in a rail and fell ; the truck passed over him, lacerating his body frightfully aud killing him.
Wellington. Mr Gillon resigns the editorship of the " Post " to contest a country district against Mr Brandon. His Excellency the Governor has not cancelled Colonel McDonnells commission, but has requested the Native Minister to reprimand him for detaining Mr Brissenden's letter.
