While the people of Auckland, atid all the*<fljhpr centres of population in tke colony have made energetic prepirations for the uiual eports and pastimes which come on this day, the townships of Waikato make no sign. Surely it is possible to do something. A few foot rares &c, and other erenfs for jureniles would furnith an occ&eion for a holiday, and for some wholesome recreation. •• We may mention that if a moTOmerit be made with that object, the proprietors of the Waikato Times will be happy to gire a prize for competition.

Professor B&ucb. — This gentleman gave one of his popular mesmeric and phrenological seances in the school-room, Hamilton West, last evening. Owiug to the inclemency of the weather, there was onlj a moderate audience, but in spite of this, the Professor gave aa excellent entertainment. A Maori megmeric subject was obtained, and his vagaries created much amusement. Two other subjects ware also brought nnder mesmeric influence, but owing to their extreme youth, the Professor did not deem it prudent to test his powers to the utmost. Ho also gave a lecture upon phrenology, illustrated, by drawings on a black board. Professor Bruoe leaves for Ngaruawahia to-day, irhere he will give an entertainment this evening.
Memorabilia.— To-day is ths anniversary of the re-election of President Grant. Friday, being the sth November, is the anniversary of the memorable Gunpowder Plot, which, in the days of our youth, were observed with many imposing and solemn rite*, more especially by the juvenile portion of the population, who, by going about with a stuffed effigy of Guy Fawke?, usually contrived to gather the wherewithal to provide a great bonfire at night, upon which fche effigy vraa solemnly and relentlessly immolated, amidst, a general fugilade of firework* and much boisterous rejoicing The familiar " Please to remember, The fifth of November, The Gunpowder Treason and Plot," ii seldom heard in New Zealand in these days. People have by common consent agreed not to rip up old sectarian sores, but to allow the relic* of mummery and bigotry to fall into disuse The memory of the Gunpowder Plot hat certainly been invested with much fiction, but it was not more diabolical than hopeless and mad. It wai -in-itself mysterious, and for purposes of State policy and Protestant zeal a further mystery was thrown over it. No name in history has been more detested than that of Guy Fawkes, but the absurdity of the old rites has become so apparent in these practical days that the namoj Guy Fawke* has become synonymous with anything grotesque and ridiculous.
