Equal and exact justice to all men, Of whatever state or persuasion, religious or political * # « * # Here shall the Press the People's right maintain, TJnawed by influence and unbribed by gain.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1875.

Complaints as to the miserable state of the boads continue to reach us from many parts of the district. The Ohitu bridge, on the Ngaruawahia, and Whata Whata road, and distant about a mile and a half from Ngaruawahia, is in a dangerous state of disrepair. A. few months ago an esteemed subscriber made an offer to repair this bridge at a trifling cost of £1. but bis offer was not accepted. The damage has

since increased, so that to repfcir the bridge now will involve an exponditurpLpf at Jeasfc. £20, and, if the ' letter Be l 4op $rpiHfc>th^ attended to, the, structure will.be tjmtifely, destroyed. JTear Jjlr s Day'jl "firm,ff»n,-tbti. same road, there is Mother jpieoe 'Qfjba<|, road which recmirei immidiMevalfTOtum*, Seeing that Mr Usy is a N «n«ntbeV v oT th« Highway Board, he certainly cannot be charged with self-seeking. Next comes a plaintive wail from a settler on the Hamilton and -Whata Whata road, who 'tells us H>k*t" about two and a half miles from Whata Whata there is a, steep Tnlf, which' is instir-' moun table for vehicles, and causes a detour through Mr Bothwell'c farm. This gentleman has been k.ind enough to allow this, though it must involve some amount" of J inconvenience to himself. The cutting do,wn of the hill would dost aboi;fc £20, matter is worthy the p < r > omDt'attentipn f of the local authorities. Complaints' potul ih 'f&it and furious, and the mutterings aro not loud bui deep. The next is from a pettier on -the, Hamilton and Ohaupo road, who came to grief lately in the darkness by falling over, the cutting about half a milaf beyond Mr Hammond's properly. The Board deserves credit for its energy in making the improvement, but the cutting should be protected in order to avert accidents. • - '-.' '

Our special telugbams fbom Auckland, published in mother column, refer to t novel case that has come before the Resident Magistrate's Court. Three settlers have been charged with a breach of the 22nd .section of the Highways Act by taking part in a ratepayers meeting at the Wade, they not being qualified ratepayers in the district. We have not a copy of the Act at hand, but we believe the clause in question provides for the infliction of * fine of £5, upon any person, not being a qualified ratepayer, who shall vote or otherwise atiempt to ererciie any influence at a meeting of ratepayers. The case is of considerable interest to country settlers, and wo shall therefore recur to it in a future issuo.

The Result op thb Dbxwing in Messrs Laird and Kirkwoods Sweep, telegraphed from Cambridge, at ten o'clock latt night, will be found in another column. We have to acknowledge the courtesy of the telegraph operators at Cambridge and Hamilton, in thus enabling us to promptly furnish our readers with this news.

"Satan at Home." — The Auckland Star notices this original satire in most flattering terms. The fourth and concluding Canto will appear shortly. R M Court, Hamilton.-- The usutl fortnightly sitting of this Court will be held on Friday next. Twenty-five oasei are set down for hearing auion&st which are several cases bv Thomas MuctfarJane, Official Assignee in the estate of Josephs. Hamilton Flour Mill Company,— There was no meeting of the Hamilton Flour Mill Company, on Saturday evening, owing doubtless : to the inclemency of the weather, and the meeting therefore stands adj turned until the 13th inst. Entertainment, Ngabuawa t tia. — An entertainment is announced to taVe place in thr school room, Ngaruawahin, on Tuesday [this] evening and, judging from the success which attended the last one under the a une auspices, it ii . likely to be of an excellent character. Stab op Waipa Lodge, I. O. G-. T.— This lodge now number twenty-five members, and is likely to number fifty members within a few months. The following brethren were electei officers for the ensuing qu-irter": — Jarrett, W.C, T. ; Sheehy, W.V.T. j Veith, T, ;. WuHF, F.S. ; Soper, C. ; Taylor, M. ; 8011, 1.G. ; Blair, 0.G.; Fitzpatrick, S. These officers will be iastalled next Saturday evening. All SAints' Day.— The Bey. W. Calder preached a most eloquent and instructive sermon in the Court-house on Sunday evening to a large congregation, taking for his subject the observance and objects of all Saints' Day. The rer gentleman, though his sojourn in the district has been short, has already .rendered himself very popular, by his thorough earnestness of oharacter, energy, and urbanity. Supplement — The pressure upon our available space has increased and is increasing to such an extent that we hare been obliged to ism© another supplement to-day to bring up arrears. We are anxious to set aside as much of our space as possible for the discussion of topics of general interest, but we desire to impress upon correspondents the absolute necessity for that brevity which is the soul of wit. Testimonial to Me. Momrar. — This gentle man, who has been for a period of nine yean in the service of MrC G Quick, as- manage* of the line of coaches in the Province of Auckland, has been the recipient of a- handsome gold watch, presented by Mr Quick, on the occasion of bis removing bis business permanently to the Waikato. The watch, bore a. suitable* inscription, in which Mr Mofflin's arduoue, and faithful services were eulogistically recognised. Mr Mofflin remains in' Auckland as manager of Mr Quick's stables there. Lubus Nature. — A correspondent, who signs "Bull-calf," -forwards from Springfield, Drabble, the following curious description of a calf : — "Born October 16, a calf, head perfect, two hind legs perfect, one fore leg bent up under the head and shoulder, but beut the reverse way, the ribs turned inside out, the fourth leg is under the skin, and tha, bead rests on it, the fore leg lying between the two hind ones. The entraih are also outside. The cow only lived for two days. The skin fits over the head and fore leg, and only three legs »re visible." . Art Union.— We direct attention . to the announcement in our supplement by Messrs. Langb -idge and Silver of aa Art Union upon the Glasgow principle. It is proposed to limit the number of subscribers to 100, at £1 each, and the drawing will take place on or about the 21st of December, thus affording an excellent opportunity for securing Christmas and New Year gifts. From a glance at the very attractive list, which includes a great variety of handsome and costly prizes, it will be seen that the affair will be thoroughly genuine. Disteict Court.— Judge Fenton will hold a j sitting of the District Court, at Hamilton, on Wednesday, when some nine cases will come on for hearing, amongst which is an appeal by the Piako Swamp Company against the amount of rates assessed by the Kirikiriroa Highway Board. Respecting the adjournment of the Court until Wednesday a correspondent writes from, Cam bridge :— " Sir, I think suitors and the public generally have a right to complain of the conduct of Judge Fenton in adjourning the District Court from Tuesday to Wednesday without ascertaining the trouble, inconvenience, and loss it would inflict upon parties in the oases set down for hearing. Several of the persons reside at long distances from the Court-house, and they cannot know of the adjournment until they come into Hamilton. They will therefore be subjected to hotel expenses and loss of time. I think Judge Fenton ought to give some explanation at the sitting on Wednesday of his reasons for adjourning the Court.— X am &c, Plaintit ?
