Soon after the hard labour gang were turned out this morning to work on Bell Hill, one of prisoners, Cyrus Haley, a notorious Auckland fire raiser, attempted to escape, —made his way ino Moray Place, then into Stuart-street, followed by Warder Miller, Miller hailing him in usual manner, asked him in Queen's name to surrender. Haley continued running, when the Warder bronght his rifle to present, pulled the trigger, and shot Haley through the back, ball coming out of his chest near the lungs. Haley ritill had impetus) and he ran on about ten paces to lamp-post, laid his hand on it, sat down on footpath, and died. Haley la>ely threatened the gaol chaplain. Criminal calendar light.
