Constable Axam, convicted upon three charges, was sentenced to two years. Robert Thomson and William Wilsun, indicted for passiug a bad half sovereign on Dennis Ruby, were senteoced to three months. Two seamen, for assaultiug a constable, were seuteaccd to nine months. Grand Jury threw oat bills against Annie Afosoleoa and Harriet Podesta, for alleged perjury in liceasing case against Pacific Hotel. The Police Court was occupied all day with a charge agaiust William Kirby, coal and firewood merchant, of assault with intent on the wife of Baine, firewood dealer, Wakefield-street. The evidence was to <the -effect that Kirby had been on friendly terms with Baine. Ktrby made overtures to his wife. She told her husband, who began however to suspect her. On Friday he left with a horse on pretence of going into the country, but put it m a stable cluie by. Returned and concealei himself in the chiffonier; heard Kirby come in — his wife resisted him — Kirby endeavoured to compel compliance with his wishes — would have succeeded only Baiu stepped out and prevented him. Mrs. Baine*s evidence was to effect that Kirby placed his hand over her mouth and subsequently wrapped a counterpane around her head to prevent her crying out. [The other details are unfit for publication. Ed.] The case was adjourned until to-morrow. Wylie, a gentleman from Victoria, is bere negotiating- with Government for large block of land for a number of good settlers in Victoria, who uesire to remove to New Zealand. He proceeded to Tauranga to inspect land at Katikati.
