LAST NIGHT'S ENTERTAINMENT
The Hamilton Hall has passed throagh a chequered and varied career. Within it9°.wal]a hare the devotees of Terpis chore tripped upon the light fantastio toe till early sunshine peeped ia at the windows, In days of jore a Janiouj local George Eobins there plyed his vocation. The offerings of Ceres have been piled fherein,' and on one occasion during a performance, the roof was gayly festooned with onions which, formed an appropriate decoration, and perhaps prevented many a wayward mind from being drawn entirely away in the midst of jpleasuw from the practical duties of the morrow. Infleed, during the Bentiruental portions x»f an entertainment, when emotional feeing was required to be worked up, the aaid onions might have been of great utility. The old hall has also been the scene of many a wondrous tea-ftehfc. Onca
ation,.and we have ourself psrformed some very skilful and daring feats in that Hue on, piles of newspaper exchanges with 'nothing tnore in the shape cf surgical instrument! than a pair of scissors. Daneara, auctioneers, onions, corpses, editois, and printers' devils hare successively occupied^ the old building. Last evening the Hull brightened up wifh a ray of its ancieift splendour, being crowded by an audience which contained a fair spriukling of the elite of Hamilton and the adjacent district!, assembled to witness the performances of t rofessors Jacobs and Airec. The entertain mant was gob up at rery - short notice, tho Company having only arrive" trom Ngaruawahia last evening. Notwithstanding tins, a very excellent, though short performance, was creditably gone through. The orchestra consisted of a concertina, which was plavod with considerable effect, and a drum which, fortunately for the tympanums of the audience, was not placed at all. Professor Jacob 3 opened the entertainment by pulling out from the chapeau which surmounts the iutelleotual brow of the writer of these lines, a rariety of articles which miglit possibly have filled an ordinary sack. The conjuror thea exhibited a simple and effectual moJe of growing rich by pulling half-crowns from the whiskers of gentlemen in the audience, from the walls, catching ™,c, em T3 in ? tJ *> »ir, and from his coat tails. ! t. I°, 'at a later 8ta * a B ava " jr n° roost laughable specimens of his skill as a ventriloduuL in which he excels all others who have visited New' Zealand. Aii co performed some very graceful and difficult feats on the swinging trapeze, fully maintaining hi§ title of "Kingof th© air.'* On the trapeze swinging rapidly to and fro at sharp angles he displayed almost as much oonfidence and ease as if on terra firma, standing on on, leg, while in motion without using hi* handsfc Ab a trapezist he is not to be surpassed anywhere. With a ladder on the trapeze he performed •ome remarkable feats in balancing, and he afterwards walked along a number of loaps attached to the roof. Had tho festoons of onions above mentioned still been there we verily believe this intrepid ariel performer would have utilized them instead of the loops. The troupe will appear thti evening with a new programme, and aa time will be afforded for prep*ratioas we anticpate a capital en berlainment. On Monday evening they will perform at Hamilton East, on Tuesday and Wednesday at Te Awamutu, on Tuesday and i nday at Alexandra, and on Saturday next, at Cambridge. The Company have displayed pluck in venturing into this terra incognita of theatrical enterprise, \and, we tru«t they will receive the liberal patronage they deserve.
