Commodore Goodenough, as death approached, was carried at his own request on to the quarter deck and addressed the men. He left an affectionate farewell for his wife and children; The funeial in Sydney was very largely attended, and all the offices were closed. The Standing Orders Committee of the Assembly reported that the House had not the power to call a member to the bar or punish for breach of privilege, and recommended legislation on the subject.
Melbourne. It has been decided to hang Ah Yaa, the Chinese murderer, his insanity being pronounced fietitous. Lurline is the favourite for the Metropolitan. Sixteen Sisters of Mercy arrived by the mail for Sydney.
Adelaide. The Aurora, a fine new ship, was burned on the voyage to Londou. She foundered, but all the passengers reached the Cape of Good Hope safely.
Auckland, Monday evening. The Petition to Sir George Grey and other Auckland members received 1895 signatures on the first lot forwarded to the South by the Hawera to-day. Other portions will be sent by each steamer as signed. Costello, the Provincial messenger who attempted suicide by cutting his throat, is not seriously injured but lies in the hospital suffering from delirum tremens. The immigrants at the quarantine island continue all in excellent health. The Th imes 'Gas Company has declared a dividend of fire pnr cent for the half year.
The City Council voted £300 compensation in Heft of the use of water at the Western Springs fortwjelve months, as stipulated in the purchase. The Cutter Morning Star, Sullivan* owner aboard, left the Hot Springs, ( on Tuesday for Auckland, and has not since sbeen h«ard of. It is feared »he is lost. Arrived Lady Bird from South, Southern Cross from Napier.
Wanoarei, Monday evening. The dwelling house of Harding Hawken, settler, of Mangatapere, was completely destroyed by fire on Saturday, and nothing was saved. It was quite a new house and was destroyed in a few minutes.
