Newcastle, This day. A man named Neal was drowned off a barge attached to the s.s. Waipa, this day, on her trip from Alexandra. Every effort to save- the unfortunate fellow proved fruitless. Mr J. Gall, engineer, and Hone Patene did their very utmost by swimming to the rescue, V u * & was * 00 late. [The above was published as a Second Edition yesterday afternoon, sinca when Mr. Bright has been kind enough to corroborate the news.]
Auckland, Wednesday evening. The barque Director has arrived from Newcastle, under charter to Russell, Stone, and others, to load timber at Hokiangra for the British Admiralty. — To-day Mr , Fenton ruled that telegrams could not be produced as evidence unless the original was produced and the signature attested. — The Steam Packet Company accepted Niccol's tender for £1.020 for alterations, and Cran well's £588, for upholstery to steamer Llewellyn for the Fiji trade. — A Rotorua telegram states that 27 carp, forwarded by Mi Young from Taupo for Lake Rotorua, have been received. Whares for Vesey Stewarts pirty of settlers at Katikati are furnished ready for occupation. The question of putting a steam launch on the Katikati and Tauranga trade is being agitated. A petition for a subsidy has gone to the General Government.
Christchurch, Wednesday evening. The Lyttelton "Times" publishes a trade circular shewing that tho Canterbury Road Boards receive less from General Government proposed endowments than they have had from the province, which has made such liberal grants that many districts hitherto found it unnecessary to levy rates.
