Of TEMPERANCE v. GOOD TEMPLARS.
To the Editor of the Waikato Times. Stß, — With reference to the challenge by five Sons of Temperance in jour issue of Saturday last, 1 wish to ask a few question*, and make a statement or two. > In the fi>st place, the letter contains a misrepresentation. Mr Turner did not say that Good Templars were invariably the best shots/ That which he did say was, that Total Abstainers had steadier tands and clearer eves than whiskey drinkers, and consequently could^hodfcvstraighter. implying thereby thafKfotalVbBtaifl|rB were superior in that respect to those who nhfculeed. "** Am^L wrong Mr Editor, wmW*l gfate that it has always bpen understtiod that •<>' Son* df^ T mperaihce" were Total Ab.-tainers and hud rules and societies of tliei • own, nnd tbut they w?re a very powerful body in America. If so, I was not aware that, such an order mated in Hamilton, however, and it so, I am very glad to hear it, but I have had a little whisper given to me by a Hitle bird to the effect, th it the five sons of temperance are men who say tnat they are in favour of moderation Wnen their names are made public, we will see how far this is true. The gnat principle being " Total Abstainers v. Moderation," I may say that a team of five Total Abstainers are prepared to fire a friendly match against the self-termed Sons of Temperance, with the rifle. If the Sons of Temperance will state through the columns of you paper whether or not they will accept the »bove, a match can be very shortly arranged lor a reasonable amount. — I am, &c, Good Templar. Hamilton, 12th July, 1875.
