James Sladen, of Victoria and Turville, formerly private secretary to Lord Tisgah (?) in England, is appointed K.C.M.G. A despatch from the Earl of Carnarvon to Governor Barclay, at the Cape, proposes a conference of delegates from the Colonies and the States in South Africa, for the consideration of a scheme of confederation. The San Francisco mails were delivered on June 2. The wool sales are proceeding satisfactorily. The sales will be concluded on the 17th inst. The wheat market is languid. New Zealand wheat 445. Money is easier. The stock market has improved, and the appre1 hension of money being scarcer has subsided. The New Zealand mails via Brindisi were delivered on June 1. The mail steamer for Australia left Ceylon on the 6th.
