Rewi, whilst at Maketu, received considerable presents from the Arawas, in the form of blankets, shawls, cases of brandy, &c. Mr C. O. Davis arrived on Saturday, having been detained by floods at Ohinemuri. To-day he met the Tapuika people in the Government buildings. The interview was very satisfactory.
Napier, Monday. In the Supreme Court this morning, the Chie,f Justice, in a brief address, congratulated the Grand Jury on the lighiness of the calendar, and the great improvement in the accommodation of the new Court House. It is a commodious and wellfurnished building ; but there is no reporting accommodation, it is very difficult to attend to the jNoceedinggW The Grand Jury found true bills inl^UJje brought on for trial.

Recently, twt) prominent *Yn Anbers of the Typographical Society, first-class compositors, and steady men, were suddenly dismissed from employment on one of the morning papers; and the Society, on application, failed to obtain the reasons for this from their employers ; while somo Society men on the ether morning paper were told they must resign from the Society or leave their employment. They selected to do the former. A meeting of the Society was held on Saturday night to discuss the whole matter, when it was decided to vote fSOs to the two men who had been dismissed from their employment, and to divide the rest pro rata amongst the rest of the members, and then dissolve the Society. At one time a strike was imminent.
Tuesday. Extension of the Southern Railway from Ashburton to Rangitata, a distance of 20 miles, was opened yesterday. -This makes a total of 70 miles opened frdm s^hristcnuroh j3o\\thward. The New Company received advices to-day from Lona^n J that N contracts had been made for the immediate building of 5 new iron ships of the highest class at Lloyd's and of extra strength. The ships are each to be one thousand tons register, and be named as follows : — Hurunui, Waipara, Waioa, Orri, and Otaki. They will arrive in the colony in time for the next wool season. The City Council have decided upen the general use of earth closets^in the city.
\ Dunedin, Monday. On^&fcujday, a marknarited Jenkins, who at one time w^s an inmate ofjltlie Lunatic Asylum, committed suicide" by bloVihg 011% his brains. He leaves several children in the Industrial School. An enquiry will be held into the circumstances of the late robbery of bank notes from the Treasury. It is supposed that the thief, finding they were cancelled, decided to return them to the gold box. The bailiffs room of the Resident Magisarate's Courthouse was broken into between Saturday night and this morning, and £10 stolen from the press. They must have obtained ingress by means of a window facing the water, which was left unlocked.^ The enqui^r* the Banknotes stolen from the Treasury was adjourned at 4 o'clock till Wednesday ; each -witness has been examined, and the proceedings were private. At an inquest held on the body of Jenkins, who shot himself on Saturday, the jury returned a verdict of temporary insanity. The Chain Hills tunnel, on the Clutha line, was successfully broken to-day. The lines and levels were withiii <frie inch.- jElie tunnel is 471 yards long. It is^ expected Ul^V tramways will run through to Clutha- in eight weeks from to-day. A large party of officials and others went out by a special train to-day and entered the tunnel, and I walked to where the break through was made. 1 Champagne was introduced, and success to Messrs [ Brogden and Sons, contractors, heartily drunk.
Tuesday. Mr P. H. Leary was returned as councillor for the Bell ward by 35 of a majority. A great deal was centred in the result, as Mr Leary has been of the strongest opponents of the Princes-street widening. " '
Oam aru, Tuesday. Tenders for the deposit of £15,000 were asked for by the Corporation, and that of the National Bank had been accepted. The terms were :— 5 per cent for £3,000 for three years ; 6 per cent for £7,000 for 12 months; and 6 per cent for £3,000 for G months. The bank is to charge no exchange or commission on the transmission of interest to debenture-holders, and is to allow an overdraft, if required, at the same rate as that given for deposits. . > , The s^mof £103 hag b^fen collected towards the ' Euphrosyne ' fund. An entertainment will also be got up in aid. Wheat is quiet ; flour, £10 to £10 10s per ton ; oats in demand, slight being expected, one firm having orders for £0,000 bags, partly for Brisbane. The market quotation is 2s 2d to 2s 4d for first-class samples. The nev^treaaurer raaje his financial statement yesterday, evening. ~He spoke well, and stated that the Government had aefded fifty thousand, for the sale of Crown Lands have increased. The amounts derived from the educational reserves, i.500, and school fees, £4,000. This makes a total addition to the estimated revenue of Jc5 1,500, bringing the
total estimated receipts up to £616,826, The esti mated expenditure will be found to reaoh £727,923, showing a deoreaie of total exp mditore proposed by the late Government of £13,650. Notwithstanding this deorease they propose to spend more than the late Government on roads and bridges. H* explained that £2,500 had been omitted for the school buildings. It is generally considered that the Government will have to retire from office, as an adverse vote will be carried by a majority of two votes. The Medbal school, in connection with the University, waa formally opened last night. Dr Coughtrey, professor of anatomy, delivered the inaugural address.
