A fire occurred yesterday afternoon, which totally destioyed the workshop, cowshed, haystac , valuible chest of tools, etc., bjlouginq; to Ml" Jackson, carpenter. The tire is siippjs<jd to have origi-iated from the lighting of a small tire on the premises in order to in^lt some glue. Mr Jackson had occasion to leave the J>uilding for a few minutes, and go across the road ; on his return, he found the pi ice in a> blaze. Constable Haddook and several others did all in their power to get the lire under, but, owing to the want of water, their efforts wtre of no avail. At one time fears wore entertained that the next building, which belonged also to Mr Jicks> i, would buffer the same fate ; but owing to the exertions of those present, the cottage was saved, but not before it had sustained a considerable amount of damage to the roof and chimney. Mr Jackson's loss is very great — the tools alone were worth about .£6O, and the stick of hay, £20. There was no insurance either on the buildings or their contents.
