It asks is it the fault of the Resident magistrate or the Police that the young roughs jof Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Auckland are not brought up. Notwithstanding the many larrikins and neglected children in the colony there are still only nineteen inmates of the Kohimarama Training School, while there is accommodation for sixty ; and suggests as a remedy for such an unsatisfactory state of things, that instructions might be issued to Resident Magistrates to assist in carrying out the Act, and to obtain through Superintendents the co-operation of the police for the same pnrpose. (From the D. S. Cross.) OHINEMURI. Mackaytown, Sunday, Immediately on arriving at the ground, the prospectors commenced to clear out one of the workings but could shew no gold. The crowd were then exasperated, and threatened Thorpe with personal violence, and the latter said he would call in the aid of the Maoris, but the police were then in attendance, and order was restored. The principal working from whence gold is said to come, is filled with water. * Coleman can shew gold at once, but he refuses to shew until his amalgamation title with Thorpe is secure. There is no doubt Smilih and Coleman will shew gold. Several crushings have been made therefrom, and yielded an average of three ounces per ton.
