WEST HAMILTON SPORTS.
The Sports which were to have taken place on New Year's Day, were adjourned till the day following owing to the very dirty weather on the first day of the year. There were a few showers during the day but not of sufficient severity to drive the spectators from the ground. The sports commenced punctually to the advertised time, and the different events came off In the following order :—: — 1. Foot race 100 yards. Entrance 2a 6d. First £2, aeeon.l 10s. Four entriei. Gtood atart ; close oontest. Cox 1 ; McKenzie 2. 2. Foot race 200 yards. Entrano© Ss 6d. Jfirat £2, second 10a. Four entries. Very plose contest. Cox 1 ; Wood 2. ....... 8. 300 yarda handicap hurdle raoe ; 5 hurdles 3ft 6in high. Entrance 2s 6(1. First £3, second 15s. Wood 1 ; Cot 2. This was a very close race throughout, and was won by very 1 4* Vaulting with pole. Entrance 2a 6d. Prize £1. 'Cox won easily. . , _ . „. 5. Hop, step, and jump. Entrance 2s 61. Inze ±,1. Cox won after a rather severe contest. • 6 200 yarda 4 part race- 50 jards walking ; 50 yards running ; 50 Yards hopping; ; and 50 on'alT fours. Entrance 2a 6d. First £2, second £1, third sa. Seven started, and this race, although novel, caused considerable amusement. Running high jump. Entrance 2s b± ifrize *i. During the contest Cox strained his back and the other two competitors, Foruuson and Cleary after trying three times, divided the prize. , 8. 100 yards race, boys under 4ft 6in. Entrance La. First 15s, second 10* third ss. Seven started. This «a* a splendid race and resulted as follows :— Martin 1 ; Davis 2 ; 10. Old men's race, 100 yarde (handicapped in 10 yards). Entrance Is. Jb'irat £1, second 10s, third ss. This excited a great deal of interest. " There were five entries, moluding a maori. Te Rore (5 yards) 1 ; Delaney (scratch) 2 ; Slater (9 yards) 3. , „, 11. Mile handicap. Entrance ss. First £4,, second £1, third 5s Three entries. McKenzie (100 yards) 1 ; PiJling (scratch) 2 ; Clearj (15 yards) 3. Tliey ran through the race nearly as they started ; Cleary lost bis 15 yards near the end of the race ; Mokenzie kepi his distance throughout. 12 300 yards consolation handicap. Entrance 2s 6J. First £1, second ss. Four started. Cleary (5 yards) 1 ; U. Cleary (scratch) 2. . . 13 200 yards forced handicap, for all winner*. £me hi Cox being hurt did not put in an appearance. Wood (scr itch) 1- TlliB was the beafc raco of the daj " Wood an Cleary van a dead heat, and in pUu-fi of dividing the prize, they decided to run again, when Wood beat his opponent 14. 100 yards race, boys under 6ft. First 15s, second 103, tfiii d ss, Seven started and gavj a splendid spin. Hyde 1 ; Pilling 2 ; Martin 3. Mr G wynne, the Secretary called for three cheecs for the subscriber and three for Mr Martin who kindly gave the use of his paddock. The request was heartily responded to.
