MEETING OF WAIKATO TURF CLUB.
(By OOH HAMILTON RKPORTKR )
A meeting of the conuaLtee of the Waikato Turf Cub was heUl at vhe Kurnißon Hotel on Monday Jest. The first business before the meeting was the fi-ipncial state of the Cub. The treasurer stated i/jau there was about £160 in hand from last year's subsciiption ; of this su v, about £60 would be required to defray expenses already incurred in io}V»ence to the divining of the new course on Mr Cox's land; this would leave a balance of £100 in hand for i\n Autumn race meeting. There would also bo available for this purpose, the members' su 'ascriptions for the coming year, and ihe gate and i suind money entries, &c. In view of this prosperous cond'uion of i,be finances, it was agreed that a race meeting should be held under ihe auspices of the Club on Febuuu'y 23rd, 1875. The committee tben proceeded U) a'-.ange a programme, which will shortly be made pu'jlic. The leading feature is a girnd Waikato Tun" Club Handicap Sweepstake, v;i<h £75 of addod money; the value of this prizo wilJ, therefore, reach the sum of £100. This should be a sufficient ataac Jon to draw some of the Auckland clacks to ihe local racecourse. A trotting mafcsh also forms a porUon of the programme. This class oS lace is particularly desiiable in a country district Avheie good roadsters must always be in demand. It is to be hoped that a large field will come to the post for tho eveni. Messrs Cox and Carpenter were then appointed a sub-committee for the purpose of enquiring after and chosing a suitable course. They proceeded on the following day to the farm of Mr Martin, and if the permission of that gentleman be given there is little doubt that the rsices will bo held in that locality. We trust that no difficulty will be experienced in arranging with tho proprietoi', as a grad course c*n undoubtedly be obtained thnre. It was stated that about 170 chains of draining had been completed round the new course, and although it will be impotsible to lace over it during
the piesent year, it was confidently stated that next racing .season the gr mud will be in splondul order, and the W.uk.ito settlers will tlien be able to boast of one of tlio h'nest couise's in New Zealand. Upon tho whole the affairs of the local racing club, as disclosed at the meeting are in a most satisfactory condition, and very good races may be looked forward to in February next. It is sincerely to 'be hoped that the small jealousies and heart-burnings, which unfortunately sometimes exist between the different small settlements of the district, will not be allowed to interfere with the success of the coming nfiiiir, and that it will be made in reality what its name imports it to be, a " Waikato" Turf Club meeting.
