The Taranaki Herald of to- Jay, contains an article re the abolition of provinces*. It says, that the quicker the decision of the Assembly is carried out, the better for the colony, and tnat in Auckland, all outside of Queen and Wyndham streets are in favor of the abolition pioposals. Napier, Saturday. A public meeting will . be held on Tuesday to discuss the questiou of Provincialism v. Centralism. The public here express disapprobation of the votes given on Mr Vogel'a resolutions. Dunedin, Saturday. A fire broke out during the night at the steam saw mills and timber yard of Messrs Gutluie and Larnach, Princes street. The premises are of a very extensive , character, .pomm-ising steam saw mills, planing, moulding, tonguiug, grooving, and flooring, door, sash, and furniture factories, besides large stocks,, of builders' ironmongery and materials. Owing to the combustible nature of the material the fire 'burned very 'fiercely,' and defied all efforts to extinguish it. , The whole city was illuminated, and the lurid glare could be seen for miles around. Shortly .ifler the alarm was given the fire brigade' mustered and used their utmost exertions to prevent the extension of 'flames to adjoining premises, and notwithstanding their effort Mv Havrmth'.s Spanish Restaurant and store caught fire several times, but was ultimately saved with difficulty. The loss is about £35,000. The following is a detailed statement of the insurances : — Haworth's store and Spanish restaurant, New Zealand Insurance Company, £1,000. Guthrie and Larnachs timber mill: New Zealand Insurance Company, £6000; South British, £2000'; 'Norwich Union, £2000 j Royal, £1000 ;' Victoria, £2000'; Australian Alliance, £1000; Standard, £2000; National, £2500; Total, £16,500.
