CAMBRIDGE. (From our own Correspondent.)

The public dinner to bo given to Mr Mackay by the reaident* of Cum bridge nnd the vicinity tolcea place on Tuesday, the 9th, at Laird's Hotel. A largo number of the settler* and others havo signified their intention of being preient. A man named MrOco who wo* in the employment of the Messrs Hully, of Cnmbrid^e, met with a very serious accident while delivering » cask of beer at ono of tio hotels, having lnllcn down tlio cellar— n height of several feet 5 he wns \ery seriously injured, and it is femcrt that his spine is alluded, as ho lnul to be carried home, and hat been unable to movo mnco the aroident. Mnr-h sympathy is felt for the unfurl unato nmii, who linn 11 lurgo fiiuuly of young children enhiely dependent ir on him for vuppoit. lain informed thnt it, has been contom plated by the Te Awnmutu people lo have a paper hunt. in thoir district atan euily date, and that they purpoio inviting sulih of their Ciuubridgo friends and other* us are likely to join in the sport. Mt'otingi of this kind havo a good effect in promoting a feeling of cordiulity between the settlers of tha various communities, besides promoting the desire to obtain and preserve 11 belter elasa of horses than is »t piescnt to be found in the district. I believe Hint 50/- an aero has been refused for over 100 acres in the Wmtoa district, about six uiilcd from the Arohd mountain and about thirty fl»o mile^ from Cambridge ; a sufficient evidence of the ownei'j belief in ut> quality of tho

l.md, and of the iuvornblc nature ot its position and the ] r isopctivo advantages resulting therefrom. Willun the p.ist week several farms have changed hands m the Tiotaoroa district, about G miles from Cambridge, at pi ices greatly in advance of anything yet obtained for land in that duci'tion. The new pound for the Cambridge district is now nearly completed. It is situated on the flat nearly opposite the Duke of Cambridge Hotel ; Mr J. P. Thompson has been appointed pound keepers A man named George Parker was brought up during the , wcolt, charged with steal ing 8/- worth silver law from the premise* of Messrs H. &J. P. Campbell. Colonel Lyon and Mnjor Wilson occupied the Bench. Packer pleaded guilty to the charge, but on account of the small yulug of the article stolen, nnd the non-appearance of Mr Campbell to press the charge, Parker was dismissed with a caution. The pheasants in this district are very numerous this year. A good deal of shooting has been going on, though the number of birds obtained was not always commensurate with the amount of ammunition expended. The JN"atT' Contingent is novr in Cambridge twaiting orders as to their disposal and destination. It is rumoured here that they are to be attached to the Volunteer Engineer Militia, and are to commence work on one of the sections of the Wnikato Railwny Extension lino. There is still a great want of house accommodation in Cambridge : numbers of families who are now residing in Auckland, Hamilton, and elsewhere, but who are unable to find house room here, are compelled in many instances through this serious drawback to remain separated from those who are actively employed in the maintenance of their households. The want of cottages in the township suitable for working men's families has so far been a great barrier to the advancement of the village.
