DUNEDIN. Wednesday.
The Dunedin nomination system continues to be largely availed of by Otago settlers. Numerous applications are being received by immigration officers. Bastings, late Goldfields Secretary, has given notice in the Provincial Council of a waut of confidence motion, offering as a reason that the constitution of the new Executive and their land policy are unsatisfactory. Owing to reports circulated as to the character of the immigrants by the ship Asia, many of them could not obtain employment. Iv answer to a question asked in the Provincial Council, the reports were said to be exaggerated, as most of the immigrants were of a very good description. Some of the single girls, however, have been sent back to the barracks because they were found to be useless as servants and uncivil to their employers. Bastings thought it was clear that 33 of the single girls had been sent out either from a reformatory or workhouse. The escort brought down 90600z gold for the month.
