BOAT RACE.

On Saturday afternoon tliero was a considerable muster of people at N^aruawaliia to witness the boat race between two crews composed of Volunteer Engineer Militia, — one crew being composed of men stationed at Taupiri, and the other of those at Ngaruawohia. The stakes were £20 a side. At four o'clock the two boats took their places, and got away to ' a Rood start, tlie Taupiri crew having a slight adrantage in the firat few strokesi The rowing of both crews was good, but, unfortunately, the race was spoiled by & foul at the buoy. The two boats were abreast on reaching it, the Ngaruanahfa boat having the inside pla*e, ran close to the buoy nnd unshipped oars on the starboard side. The Taupiri boat, according to the decision ©f tho umpires, fouled at that time, having come so close as to prevent the port oars of her opponent to be worked. The race was over from this time, a3 the Ngaruawahia crew relying on the foul to give them the race, pulled steadily round the course. The Taupiri crew, some time a'ter they landed, claimed a foul previous to tlie one above noticed. 'Jhe protest was disallowed by tho judges on th<* grounds that it was too late, in fact, after the race had been given te the other crew* It is rouch to be regretted that tile race was not pulled through, as the cr«ws were very evenly matched, and an exciting and close finish was to be anticipated. Another rantch is spoken of, and' in- the interest of sport wo trust that it may. eventuate. A supper was given By the two orewi after the race, and twenty-fire tab down to %n exceedingly good spread, prepared by Messrs Thomas and Davidson, of the Central Hotel. After tho cloth was cleared* the usual loyal toasts were given from the chair, which was occupied by Capt Eowe, who was fkcfld byLieubEyre. That of "The Two Crews," "The, Judges," "Success to tho Volunteer Engineer Militia,' "The Press," «nd "The Ladies*" followed r they were al 1 heartily drunk and suitably responded to. Before the chairman and rice left the room, three hearty cheers were given for each. All present were unanimous in the statement that they spent a very pleasant evening. We trust that there may be cause for many such meetings-.
