RAGLAN. (FROM A CORRESPODENT )

I RER from ono of your recent papcis (hat the Commissioner of Telegraphs has given instructions to have the wire stretched to Raglan ; it is to be hoped that this intention will he carried out at once, as at present anything th.it happens either in Aur kl.iud, Waikato.or elsewhere, betw cci. Thumlay and the following Tuesday does not reach us until 4pm.or so on the latter d.iy. Th« cost of en-etui,' the telegraph to Raglan would not ho great, as the timber for the poles stands along the route which it would probably take. Theieii no doubt that it would be agi eat boon to this out-of the-way place, ivnd I believe would be the means of bringing many new settlers into our midst, who under the present cucumstanees do not rare .ibout occupying land in districts similarly situated to this I believe it would pay its working expenses. The annual licensing court sat pursuant to notice at the Court House, at 12 o'clock ou Tuesday last, for the purpose of considering applications tor publican's licenses and grautiug certificates for same. The three gentlemen appointed Commissioners under the Licensing Act, 1873, weic present, — they are Messrs Walks, Savage, and Wilson, and the chairman is the Resident Magistate. There being no complaint against the t*'o applicants or thsir houses, their applications wei c favourably received and certificates issued. The applicants presented a petition to the Court, praying that the license fee might be reduced to £10 ptr annum instead of £20, on the grounds of the general decrease of traffic, etc, uhich was favourably received. It is a matter of wonder how a pubhc.iu here can manage to make feudicient to keep his family and p.iv so heavy a license fee. For their sakes it is to bo hoped the provincial authorities will listen to their pr.vycr, and substiact £10 from the present amount.
