LATEST SOUTHERN NEWS.
Tauranga, Wednesday. TVJr Stewart returned from Kati Kali last night. He reports favourably of the quality and pontion of the land, but complains that several of the west sections have been given to the natives by the Government. Had it been otherwise he would have decided upon settling at Kati Kati at once. The Opotiki telegraph line was completed yesterday. Office will open for business at the end of May. liaise, of tho native department, is quietly and satisfactorily settling the native boundary dispute at Horo Horo, about which a sensational telegram lately appeared. The dispute was merely tribal, and was easily adjusted. The Bay of Plenty Times points out that there are 30,000 acres of magnificent country near Tauranga suitable for settlement belonging to the nativts. It urges upon the Government the desirability of purchasing the same. Mr Chad wick reports that wheat grown at Tauranga realised the highest price paid for that cereal m the province this season.
Nelson, Wednesday. The Alhambra has arrived from Melbourne. She called off Hokitika, but was unable to communicate owiug to the rough state of the bar.
