CAMBRIDGE.
(from a correspondent). t iie township of Cumbridge nnd tlie surrounding districts do not appear to have received due attention of late at tlie hands of your correspondent. We are nevertheless progressing. I may tell you that an acre in tlie township sold for £150 the other day, nnd one rood sold for £50. Whilst writing in reference to the price of land, I will not omit that which is offering for fnrnn. £8 per acre was offered the other day for siine land belonging to Mr lUinciman, and refuser! ; it is rumoured that there was .a possibility of business having been done at £10. There are 27,000 acres of land in grass in and'about Cambridge, and the root and grain crops could not possibly look better. All are gaining heart at tlie prospect of peace and plenty being in store for them. As regards our township, the demand for houses very much exceeds the supply, although a number of new habitations have s rung up of late. Additions »re about to be made to Mr Walner's hotel ; this is very much wanted, as "shakedowns" have long been the order of the "night" for traveller! through Cambridge. Amongst the other improvement:! that have not been noticed in your columns, is the new steam saw mill that hns been erected by Mr Hally; it will be worked by the some mnchinery as the flour mill belonging to the 6ame enterprising citizen. Timber has been very scarce and dear of Ja f e ; never mind, reform is at haivd. Next time you visit us, I trust that cheap timber' and the demand for houses will have led to great nlterntions. Nobody m troubling himself about native alfairs. The "war office" Hlill exists, and flourishes; the mysterie* thai are *.ippo<cd to be concealed* within its walls are not, however, divulged- to the common rye of a common scribbler. Mr Mrfckoy appenra and disappears ; whither he goes and whence he omes no man knows, and does not matter much. A report, is current heie that he has bpen appoinlcd General Government Agent for Auckland. Cricket i.i the order of tlie duy with the happy ones who can aflbrd the time to indulge in a national game. A return match will be played to-morrow (Saturday), between Alexandra and Cambridge Alexandra has brought over its strongest team and e<peets to w.n. Time will show.
