ATTEMPT TO ASSASSINATE MR MACKAY. PROTECTED BY REWI.
'Alexandra, Wednesday, 9 a.m. Tremendous excitement here last night. Messenger arrived from Kuiti, bringing the- intelligence that °an attempt to murder Mr Mackay had been made yesterday morning. It appears that he was in bed in his tent, opposite Tawhiaas house, when a Maori entered and struck him on the head wit!i a native weapon. Mr Mackay succeeded in seizing him, and struggled for the weapon although hurt?.' (A. native who was outbide heard the struggle, rushed in, andjthrew the fellow outside. There was groat excitement in the settlement. Eewi took Mackay to his own house, and threatened to snoot 4 any who. followed to molest him. Taonui and other chiefs are greatly excited and angry at the attempt., Mackay is not alarmed. ' ' He says he wants an answer to his demand for Sullivan's murder. NuLu, fee chief of Todu*a murderers, is said to be the sole contriver of the affair. 4.10 p.m. Nothing of importance has happened to-day. Tawhiao is on the road up. Mackay safe with Eewi.
