Wellington Mr Whitaker, of Auckland, has been offered a seat in the Upper llouse, but Las not jet accepted it. Mr A Shea quotes flour at €12 10s, to 213 10s ; oat, 2s 8d to 3s Id. Consumers and dealers arc operating cautioush, anticipating a further decline. The appointment of Mr Benzoni to the chief [clerkship of the Public Works Office, by Mr Knewles, Under Secretary, caused much jealousy. The Press denounces Mr Knowles. Foxtown. Johnston's flax store, containing a quantity of flfti And machinery , has been cousumed by fire. The mill was saved, but the works will be stopped for a short time, the loni is at pre-cnt unknown, but is- considerable.

Christchurch. Meal's. Rosse, Stead and Co. report wheat deKvering bljwU. Bujcrs are cautious, and lire offering 4s 3d per bushel for prime parcels. Oats are scarce ; farmers holding foe higher rates. Barley has been gold at 7s (id per bushel ; butter, 8d to BJd ; cliee'so, 7d to 7id
