MR, STAFFORD'S ACCEPTANCE OF OFFICE.. The House met at seven to-night, pursuant to adjournment. The Hon. Mr. Fox announced that the Ministry had tendered their resignation, and they would now only hold office until their successors were ready. They had advised the Governor to send for Mr. Stafford'. He desired to exp.iess the extremely satisfactory relations which, during their term of office, had existed between the Governor and the Ministry. The Hon. Mr. Stafford announced that he had been sent for and had accepted the task of forming a new Ministry. He hoped on Tuesday to be able to make a satisfactory statement regarding the result of his efforts. Saturday. It is rumoured that the new Ministry will comprise Messrs. Stafford, Waterhouse, Gillies, Reid and Curtis. (from our own correspondent.) Wellington, Saturday, 3 p.m. The' Hon. Mr. Waterhouse has refused to join Mr. Stafford. A lobby rumour says that Mr, Gillies is undecided if not .unwilling. He is to meet the Auckland members to-day to consult, It is reported that Sir D. Monro is undesirous of joining. It is said that Mr. Stafford encounters considerable difficulty in forming a Ministry. A meeting af his supporters is about to be held. The uncertainty of his tenure of office from the incohesion of the late Opposition is deemed objectionable by Messrs. Fitzherbert, Gillies, Curtis, and Reid, all holding provincial offices. It is considered possible tnat Mr. Waterhouse will be the next Superintendent of Wellington, in the event of a vacancy occurring. He is a man of high position, ability, and growing popularity The late Ministry and their supporters dine together on Tuesday. Latest accounts state that Mr. Fitzherbert has declined office. Messrs. Gillies and Reid will probably accept, but this is not yet definitely known. Christchurch, Saturday. The immigrants'by the 'Fnedberg' have been taken up rapidly. At auction, fat steers fetched £6 l'Js. to £9 ss. : two-year-old heifers, £159.; cows, £6 to £8; draught horses, £22 ; light horses, £2 to £10. Ghreymouth, Saturday. Messrs. White and O'Connor, the members for Westland, who voted against the Ministry on the want-of-eonfidence motion, were hanged and burned in effigy last night. The Ota go Daily Times says that parties are so evenly balance 1 that it is difficult to see how other than a coalition Ministry can carry on business in the Assembly, and nnless'Mr. Stafford is certain of a fair working majority he had better abandon altogether the task of forming a new Cabinet. A mineral has been brought from Bligh Sound and analysed by Professor Black, who reports that it contains copper to the extent of not quite one per cent., but no tin. The Star of the East Mine, Carrick Eange3, expect a large crushing in a few days. Shares are advancing to £5 10s. The Heart of Oak and Elizabeth also wash up shortly. The. claim known as Ball and party's, Shag Valley, gives indications of richness. The reef has increased in thickness, and gold is plainly visible in the stone.
