GOOD ROADS.
PALMERSTON NORTH TRIBUTE. “I must refer to the wonderful progress made during recent years,” stated Mr M. A. Eliott, when ’returning thanks at Tuesday’s Chamber of Commerce meeting for his election to the presidency. He added, states the “Manawatu Times,” “The progress has been steady and that which has done more than anything else, perhaps, to make it a large centr6, is the motor traffic and particularly the rurgl buses. The Chamber should be ready in every way possible to assist those who are so helping the town and should welcome any improvement in roads, bridges' and other means of communication to Palmerston North. ’ ’ / The effect of the motor traffic, added Mr Eliott, is that the smaller towns are standing still and the larger onOs going ahead. It was private enterprise that was’ bringing all these benefits to Palmerston North and those firms deserved all the assistance that Palmerston North could give them. Mr Eliott also instanced the value of the improved Gorge road to Palmi erston North and added that if Palm- ; erston North had to payjffie whole cost of the reconstruction, it would have /paid the town handsomely because of the business resulting therefrom. : -Referring to the Borough Council, he thought that body would welcome co- ’ operation for the advancement of the town.
