LOCAL BURGLARY

AN. ARREST MADE. VARIOUS ARTICLES. RECOVERED. The arrest was made by the Dahnevirko' police yesterday morning of. a young Maori named Nikera Timu (20), on a charge of breaking, entering, and theft, involving the premises of Mr H. Gair (draper), the Railway Refreshment Room, and Mr D. Dunbar’s residence, Waipukurau, ‘and the accused is to appear in the local Magistrate’s Court on Friday morning. It appears that in effecting an entry to Mr H. Gair’s drapery, and clothing establishment on Saturday night the -burglar made a hole in-the glass of a window at the rear and unfastened it. Following upon'removing a suit-case 1 and a quantity of clothing, do the total value of about £l5, he then beat a retreat through the open window, stopping to fix the fastening.

A Press Association message from Dannevirke states that acting on. information received from Waipukurau relative to a burglary there on Sunday, a sharp lookout was kept by the Dannevirke police,- diligent inquiries resulting in a suspected Maori boy being located. Constables Gibbs and Kcarton proceeded to the Makirikiri Maori pa, near the racecourse, and, effected the arrest of a youth named Nikera Timu, aged 18 years. The constables also recovered stolen property together with a quantity of other articles alleged to have been stolen from the Waipukurau Railway Refreshment Rooms and a drapery shop there. Accused appeared at the Police Court yesterday afternoon, charged that on February 13, 1927, at Waipukurau, he did break and enter by day the dwelling house of David Dunbar and steal therefrom one diamond and emerald ring, one brooch, one fountain pen, one blank cheque and about 2/9 in money, of a total value of £25, the property of David Dunbar.

Senior-Sergeant O’Hara asked that the accused be remanded to appear at Waipukurau on Friday at 10.30 a.m. Other charges are pending. The application was grantee!.
