PORANGAHAU NOTES. __ POSTAL PROGRESS. . As the required number of telephone subscribers have now been. connected; the hours in the. local Exchange have . been extended, and commencing from Sunday last the local Exchange is open as under:- —.

Sundays: 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.; 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. . Holidays:-; 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.; 7 p.m. to 18 p.m. ’The daily, extended hours, 6 a.m. to midnight, are to commence shortly. A start was made: on Tuesday with the erection of the now residence, which will be quite an asset to the township. GENERAL NOTES. Although there has been a very hot and dry spell of weather lately, feed for stock is fairly plentiful, and the stock is in good condition. Rain will be most welcome, as the country round about is very dry. The Porangahau. sports are to be held on Friday, February 25th, and there is every promise of a most successful meeting. A lengthy and varied programme has been arranged for the occasion. Messrs H. T. Hutana and A. Healey are the secretaries. - . The East Coast dog trials are to be held at Porangahau on March 9th, 10th, and lltlip.and some valuable prizes and trophies are offered for competition. Messrs R. McGreevy and E. McLennan arc the secretaries, and arc working hard for the success of the meeting. -On Friday afternoon next a grand bazaar is to be held in the Public Hall, in-aid of St. Michael’s Church funds. The following arc the stall-holders: — Lady Hunter’s Stall: Miss Atkinson. Fancy Stall: Misses Ormond and Hunter and Mrs Jamieson. Produce: Mrs Forrest. Sweets: Mrs A. Douglas. Ice-cream: Miss Watt. Surprise Packets: Miss White and Mrs McLean. Afternoon Tea: "Misses Cook and Beattie and Mrs Brierley. It has been arranged that there will be no dance in the evening, although previously advertised. TENNIS MATCH. A tennis match between the Porangahau Tennis Club and the Poho Maori team was played on Mr Board’s court on Saturday last. The day was beautifully fine, and quite a large number of visitors were present. A dainty afternoon tea was served, and gramophone selections were given during the day. The Porangahau Tennis Club w'on the '.match, having scored 9 sets and 72 games. The Maori team scored 7 sots and 64 games. Porangahau residents were, shocked to hear of the tragic death of Mr Wighton, which took .place at . Wai-

marama Beach on Sunday last, while bathing. Mr Wighton, who resided in Hastings at the time of his death, was a resident of this district for some time, and while here, always did his best for the progress of the district, and he was held in the highest esteem by all. His wife and family have the sympathy of a very wide circle of friends.
