KAIKORA.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) The last meeting of the Debating Society proved one of the most enjoyable of this session. Shakespeare’s “ Merchant of Venice ” was read, the parts being sustained as follows: —Duke, Mr Graham ; Antonio, Mr T. A.Garry ; Bassanio, Mr A. Clark ; Salarino, Mr J. Hewitt; Gratiano, Mr W. Tod ; Lorenzo, Mr R. Tod ; Shylock, Mr R White ; Tubal, Mr F. Hewitt; Launcelot Gobbo, Mr G. Tod ; Old Gobbo, Mr Green ; Portia, Miss L. Clark ; Nerissa, Miss White; Jessica, Miss E. White. Despite some-doubts as to the reception of such a classic, all were delighted with the rendering, and many hopes were expressed that in future, places will again be found on the syllabus for other of the plays. With the hockey season now ended new interest in the condition of the recently laid down tennis court is evident. The sward is in splendid condition, and with the regular course of rolling at the hands of enthusiastic members it is now undergoing bids fair to be in a first class playing state at the opening in a few weeks.
