A meeting of art students at Auckland advocated the need for a properly constituted “ life ” school in Auckland, with organised competitions, also travelling scholarships. The Otago Education Board has decided to subsidise the establishment of public school libraries to the extent of giving 10s for every £1 raised locally, and to assist School Committees in making the selection of suitable books. The Board also resolved that all schools of three rooms and over should have fire drill as a regular part of the school work. At the final meeting of the executive committee that carried out the arrangements for the visit to Auckland of the American Fleet, the accounts submitted showed that the estimated expenditure of £6OOO had been exceeded by £l3B.
At the Dunedin Police Court Ah Aloon, a Chinese shopkeeper, was fined £3O for having opium suitable for smoking in his possession. Accused had been previously fined £3O for a similar offence. The police alleged that accused trafficked in opium, and ran a pakapoo school, and did no legitimate business as a storekeeper.
The fully-dressed body of a man, who was later identified as John Taylor, of Hampstead, Ashburton, was found lying on the footpath in that suburb on Thursday morning There were no signs of a struggle and no marks on the body. Deceased, who attended the races the previous day, was a married man, thirty-five years of age, with several children. After taking evidence regarding the finding of the body, the inquest was adjourned till Monday. It is_ understood there are no suspicious circumstances.
