Addressing the Canadian Alanufacturers Associations’ Convention at Alontreal, the president said that under the preferential tariff the woollen industry had steadily declined. The value of woollen manufactures imported during the year ending April,lB97, was £1,400,000, and the value for the year ending April last £4,200,000. Since 1900 capital in connection with the Canadian wool production had decreased by £720,000; hands employed by 2200; and the annual value of the products by £320,000. The president appealed to Canadians to insist on an increase in wollen duties in order to prevent the extinction of the industry.
