# A storekeeper named Charles Goveidock was drowned by the upsetting of a boat at Awakino. A man named Edward Wilson, who was injured in a tram accident at Khyber Pass, Auckland, on Tuesday, died on Friday. The Southern Cross Hotel, Reefton, was gutted by fire at 3 a. m. on Thursday. The licensee (Mr Findlay) and his wife were away at Greymouth. The building- was insured in the Commercial Union for £7OO, the stock for £5O, and the furniture for £l5O. The property was owned by the licensee.
At the conclusion of a case at the Auckland Police Court in which a young man was charged with the theft of a letter containing two postal notes and Bs. in stamps belonging to his late employer, Mr Cloyton (one of the presiding justices) commented upon the small salary which the accused had been receiving. Addressing the employer the J.P. remarked : “ You employed this young man at £1 per week expecting him to keep himself respectable and to find himself. The
Bench considers that it is not right of a respectable tradesman to employ a young man at such a wage and expect him to be honest. It is out of all reason.”
A young man named William Bird was run over by a ballast train at Greymouth and killed. He has left a widow and two young children.
Charles Davis, a fisherman from Makara, was run over by a train at Wellington and decapitated. Evidence at the inquest showed that the man had been drinking heavily.
The .secretary of the Timaru Friendly Societies’ Dispensary was charged under section 12 of the Friendly Society Act, 1832, with failing to send in proper returns of receipts and expenditure to the deoartment in the years 19 )6 and 1907. Defendant admitted the offence and sMd he bad been unable to get the accounts passed by the board of management in time to allow him to make the return to the department within the prescribed lime. He was fined £3 and costs, £2 Ils.
