DEBATING SOCIETY.
o A meeting of the Waipukurau Literary and Debating Society was held last evening in St. Andrew’s Hall. The weather was most unpropitious, however, and the debate, “ Is the Rise of the Yellow Races fraught with danger to Western Civilisation ?” which was to have taken place was postponed until to-morrow (Friday) evening. Considering the very bad weather the attendance was by no means small. Mr P. S. Carroll was chairman. The secretary. Mr C. J. Cooke, read correspondence from the secretary of the Kaikora Debating Society accepting the Waipukurau Society’s challenge to a debate on the subject of “ Heredity v. Environment: which has the Greater Influence on Character ?” stating also that they had chosen the side of “Environment,” and suggesting that Mr Watson, M.A., of Waipawa, should act as judge. On the motion of Mr D. J. Graham, seconded by Mr Cooke, it was decided to hold the contest, which will take place locally on the 19th inst. The selection of Mr Watson as judge of the debate was agreed to. The secretary "was instructed to write to Mr Watson, acquainting him of the fact that he had been chosen as judge and to ask him to accept the position ; also to write to the Kaikora Society agreeing to the selection of Mr Watson. On the motion of Mr Graham it was decided to leave all details of arranging’the debate in the hannds of the executive committee. The following new members were duly elected: —Messrs W. Mitchell and G. F. Cox. , Mr E. H. Marsh was selected to take the place of Mr Graham in the debate upon the Yellow Peril on Friday, owing to the latter being unable to attend. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chairman.
