HOCKEY.

n WAIPUKURAU v. KAIKORA.

The Waipukurau men’s team journeyed to Kaikora and defeated the home, team by 3 goals to 1. The game was witnessed by a large number of residents, and the enthusiasm for the game of hockey at Kaikora is not lacking supporters. I think the Waipukurau, Waipawa and Onga Onga residents could well follow the example of the Kaikora people. Trqe to their principle the usual.good feeling was manifested in all their actions, and it was a treat to play against such good sports. After their stand against the Fire Brigade team it was generally supposed that Kaikora ■would win. Conti ary to expectations Waipukurau players asserted themselves and gave one of | the finest displays of hockey pro- ■ bably seen this season. The 3 goals were scored in the first twenty-five minutes, and it is safe to say that even the Waipukurau men surprised themselves. Kaikora did not shine to advantage until the last ten minutes, when they put .in a lot of useful play. For the winners, Pack in goal played a safe game, and is without doubt the best back in the competition. Stoddart and Young played a very useful game, and I notice did not cramp their goalkeeper as they usually do. Coldwell and Barrie put in a lot of useful work and a notable feature in their play is that they are learning the system of attack. Amongst the forwards I am inclined to think that Chilwell on present showing is the most heady and useful man. Pirie, who scored two goals, plays a very fast game and is a very dangeous man, but I think that Chilwell ■was responsible for the goals. Bailey, who scored the other goal, played the best game of this season. He was always on the ball and his passing and calling for passes proves that he keeps his mind on the game. It is men of his stamp who helps to bring sport, to the height of perfection. Bone, on the wing, and Westbrooke showed improved form, Bone being unfortunate on one or two occasions in not shooting goal. For Kaikora, the goal keeper should learn to kick more. F. Witherow did not play up to his usual form. In a number of cases, instead of beating his man, he seemed content to drive fireball in goal. The other full back, although not such a strong hitter, played a much safer game. Of the half backs, the centre half, Russel, played the best game. Although at times inclined to play forward, nevertheless he proves himself a useful man. Of the forwards, Taylor on the wing is probably the most useful man in the team. He is a hard man. to beat and a strong attacker. Hicks and Rowbottom also are two very useful forwards. Hicks scored Kaikora’s goal. White, the Kaikora heady forward, was a spectator, being indisposed through a chill caught after the match with the Fire Brigade. Mr J. Peters, Waipawa, and Mr Gerry, Kaikora, refereed and gave general satisfaction.

The Waipukurau Ladies’ team forfeited to Kaikora. The Waipawa Ladies’ team made a draw with Ormondville, at Waipawa, there being no score. Onga Onga men’s team forfeited to Waipawa.

The following table shows the position of the teams in the Wright Cup .competition.
