Concerning a New Road.

—— TO COST £lOOO. ' At Tuesday’s meeting of the Waipukurau Road Board, the Tourere road, or Ngahape road extension, again came up for consideration. This is a proposed new roac in the Takapau survey district which ceriaiu sett ers are urging the local bodies to form, in order to get access to their holdings. A map showing the locality was laid upon the table, and a deputation consisting of Messrs Rathbone, Harve ~ and Groom waited upon the Board in support of the proposal, giving a good deal of necess try information. In view of high prices asked by settlers for land proposed to be taken, oi e member of the deputation thought that the question of price should be settled by arbitration. The proposed road extends a distance of about tour miles. Mr Wall moved, in effect, that this Board vote a sum ot £2OO towards the work, and that the Waipawa County Council, the Patangata County Council, and the Wanstead and Wallingford Road Boards be asked to contribute Wall explained that the GovKrnment had promised £200; and Tach of the county councils would, bethought, give £lOO, making £6OO with this Board’s contribution if

his proposal were carried. He btrongly urged upon the Board the y'great necessity of this road, for a of settlers were absolutely blocked in ; those interested would contribute liberally to the cost, aud had even already gone to considerable expense in making temporary road to “get their produce out. These settlers were entitled to a road, and ih y should be given jus ice. The chairman (Mr Gow) seconded the motion. The money would not be required for some time. The road, he admitted, was very necessary. Mr Williams, while admitting that the road was greatly needed, objected to the Board voting so large a sum before it knew what the other bodies would contribute. It seemed to him, moreover, that this B >ard was very little interesteu i i the proposed road, if area was any guide. Mr Wall said this Board got most rates from the locality. inc settlers had been paying rates tor vears, and the money had been spent in other parts. The Board should befriend the settlers in ihe back blocks as wel as those on front roads.

Mr Williams thought there shout! be a conference of local bodies oeHK)rO auy money was voted. Then then the subject could be fully discussed* A. formal application oy letter for assistance would have no effect. He moved an amendment tnat a conference of bouies interested be held. Mr McKay seconded. ~There were thus two for the wWcion and two for the amendment, chairman said he und rstood r Williamson (absent) was in favour of the new road. He would give his casting vote for the motion. After some further discussion, it was decided that the local bodies interested be duly waited upon for of obtaining subsidies from them for the work. The proposed road is estimated to cost between £BOO and £lOOO, and there is now a likelihood of its being made.
