TOWN BOARD.
Ordinary monthly meeting of the Watpukurau Town Board was held last evening. Present —Commissioners Chambers (chairman), Gore Staines, Seymour, Williams, Mitchell, and Bailey. The minutes of the previous ordinary meeting and the special meeting relighting were r<ad and confirmed, Com’r Williams desiring it to be recorded that, he did not vote for the confirmation of the minutes.
Letter read from Waipukurau Road Board re £5 missing cheque, sanitary data, etc. —After an explanation by the chairman, it was resolved to ask the road board to relieve the town board of responsibility as to the missing cheque. It was resolved (Williams —Bailey) that two guineas be voted for cost of transfer of road to Knight’s past English Church.
As the land had been leased, the Railway Department withdrew its permission to impound stock from
the reserve. Requests for culverts from Mssrs B. Groom, Pemberton, and Hopkinson were acceded to. The Waipawa County Council wrote intimating that it could not comply with the board’s request to collect county rate. —The chairman moved, That this board apply to the county council to have county
roads in the town district of Waipukurau vested in the town board, and that the council be r quested to agree io refund to town board the cost of keeping such roads in repair, and that this board consent to take control in the event of the council agreeing to the request.— Com’r Gore seconded; carried. The overseer’s report, dealing with the month’s work, was read. The chairman said the grader had done very satisfactory work, and the streets were much improved in appearance. Earth sold for filling in had realised about £l4.—Com’r Williams said the grauer had made a mess of part ol Racecourse road ; he hoped it would be remedied.
The chairman made a statement as to expenditure, and warned the members that they would have to go easier. As to the contention that suburban streets were not getting due expenditure, he showed that £49 had been spent on outside streets against £4 13s in the town, the latter exclusive of wages. The Cemetery road had cost-Al7 13s 4d, Beachem’s road £2l Ils 6d, tarring Ruataniwha road £23 15s 3d, kerbing do. £3O 15s 2d—total expenditure on roads £9O 13s 4d.— Com’r Williams disapproved of the chaii man’s way of defining the
position. The ci.airman thought something should be done to improve that portion of the town opposite Air Lomas’ shop. The road required straightening and reforming. The road past Dr Godfray’s residence also required attention.—Members
to inspect the locality. The following accounts were passed for payment: —Fox £ll 14s, Phillips £7 4s, Burt £8 8s 9d, Ballantyne £4 10s, Houseman £2l 18s 2d, Booth £L 10s 7d—total, £55 5s 6d. The Board sat for an hour and a quarter.
