A Queer Prophet.
A Maori named Rua, styling himself a prophet and a brother of Jesus Christ, iscausing considerable unrest among the natives in the Whakatane district, Auckland. Large numbers are following him from place to place, He claims that he can heal the sick, restore sight, and raise the dead if they have not been dead more than two hours. He tells the natives that King Edward VII. is coming to Gisbourne on June 25th [he’ll have to.get a “ wriggle on.” —Ed.] The ~i*tives are very excited, and say £?Apakeha will be driven off the Land when the King arrives, and that a large house will be built at Gisborne for the new prophet and the King at a cost of three millions. Numbers of natives are selling horses, cattle and crops to raise money to follow the prophet. It is reported that five hundred natives are following him now, many being armed with modern fire-arms. It it is feared that the result will be a breach of the peace. Rua is a ' son of Te Kooti.
