STREET LIGHTING.
[To the Editor.] Sib,—The Town Board members are to be congratulated on their sensible decision to accept and act upon the resolution sent to them from the ratepayers’ meeting, and as the object for which that meeting was called has now been attained people are naturally asking why the abuse of the promoters is still being continued. From what I can hear it is making this township a in the eyes of the adjoining townships, more especially the ludicrous statements that are being put forward to try and prove that the attempt to boycott the ratepayers’ meeting was not a failure. In one paper they said there was only 15 present, in another 30, and in Tuesday’s Press 43, and if they go on increasing it in a similar way they will eventually reach the actual number present. What it all means is that a few persons thought that the holding of the meeting was injurious to their dignity, which, of course, was all rubbish. They tried first of all by means of a disgracefully abusive letter to prevent Dr Godfray from taking the chair—as if the doctor could possibly be influenced by an anonymous production of that kind; then they passed word round to all they thought could be influenced to boycott the meeting, quite forgetting that this is a double-edged weapon that often flies back and injures its users. We have had many sultry public meetings held here in the past, but this is the first time that an attempt has been made to try and stop people attending one by abusive and boycottiing taetics, and it is to be hoped, for the credit of the township, that it will be the last attempt of the kind. —I am, etc., Ratepayer.
